Throughout the evening you will have the opportunity to purchase "bricks" representing the wishes of our NHS faculty.  A special silent auction for vacation getaways, as well as a spot in the Gwinnett Braves' June 6 Pre-Game Home Run Derby (a chance to hit pitches thrown by Phil Neikro and Tom Glavine), will highlight the evening's fundraising activities.

AP/IB EXAMS START MONDAY, MAY 3, 2010
AP EXAMS 
AP Exams start on Monday May 3 and will continue through May 14. By now, the students should have received their confirmation letter of the exam, date, time, and location for each test. Students do not need to have the confirmation letter to get into the exam. Please pay close attention to the location because some exams are at NHS this year. The students will be given an AP packet the day of their first exam. REMIND THE STUDENTS THAT THEY MUST BRING THEIR AP PACKET WITH THEM TO EACH TEST. Also, make sure that the students bring several sharpened #2 pencils, a dark pen, and our school code 112280. They will also need to bring in a photo ID as well. Good Luck students and remember to drive safely. Please look at the NHS website for other AP News. If you have any questions contact Dr. Aarestad at 770-326-8099.

NOTE:  If your child does not show up for an AP exam, your child will need to pay a $13 return fee. If your child is a senior, this will be an obligation fee that will need to be paid prior to graduation.
 
IB EXAMS 
All IB Exams will be given on the NHS campus as indicated on the IB/AP exam schedule. All students sitting for these exams have received confirmations and schedules outlining the exam, day and time of all assessments. Students should arrive no later than 15 minutes before the starting time of the exam and should bring a blue/black pen and a #2 pencil. No electronics are allowed in the testing area.
 
 
 
Progress Reports - 5/5
Progress Reports will be coming home with your student on Thursday, May 5th.  These reports will reflect your student's work for the first fifteen weeks of the semester.  Please follow up with your students on their progress in each of their classes.

GA State Future Problem Solving (Update)
Allison Fisher won 1st place in the the Middle Division Individual competition and will be representing GA at the International Future Problem Solving Conference this summer.  Additionally, the NHS team of Parker Buntin, AJ Greenway, CJ Gromley and Amelia Watson placed 2nd in the Senior Division.
 
GE Star Award
The GE Foundation, the Institute of International Education (IIE) has designated Mary Ann Sims as the recipient of a 2010 GE STAR Award.  In addition to a one-time financial award issued to the student, the GE STAR Awards: A GE Foundation Program also grants a one-time financial award of $500 to the student's high school. Congratulations Mary Ann!
 
GA High School Ceramics Symposium Winners
NHS had a group of students selected to be in the Georgia High School Ceramics Symposium, and two of these students came away with top awards:

Julio Garcia - Best in Show (Grand Prize)
 
MUSICAL NOTES

4/26:  Beginning Guitar Concert
4/28:  Chorus to sing at the Gwinnett Braves NHS Night.  Tickets will be on sale in the cafeteria for $8.  Part of the ticket proceeds will support DECA/Sports Marketing student competitions/conferences.
5/3:  Advanced Guitar Concert
 
ORCHESTRA WINS FIRST PLACE
The orchestra captured first place in the orchestra division of the Fiesta-Val competition in Alexandria, Va., and also won the championship trophy for the entire festival. They also received a plaque denoting their superior performance rating by the judges.

GO BIG BLUE!!!
Girls Tennis
The Girls Tennis team came in 4th place in the region tournament.  For the first time in NHS history the girls tennis team earned a berth to the state tournament.  Congratulations!!!
 
Boys Golf
The Boys golf team won the region 7-AAAAA tournament yesterday by posing a team score of 298 which was 6 strokes better than 2nd place Peachtree Ridge. By winning the tournament the boys have qualified for the state championship tournament on Monday, May 3rd at Reynolds Plantation. Your Blue Devils will be one of 16 teams playing for the state championship. Senior Ryan Trocchio was low medalist for the tournament with a 1 under 71. Junior Will Delahanty added a 75, while junior Josh Klipstein and freshman Clay Trocchio each carded a 76. Senior Rodes Bowers added a 83 and Freshman Jason Mendel shot 85.  Congratulations!!!

Boys Soccer
The boys varsity soccer team, ranked #10 in this week's state rankings, will be the #4 seed from the region in the state play-offs. We will travel to play at #4 state-ranked Centennial next week in the 1st round on Tuesday, April 27, 7:30pm.  Please congratulate these young men on a job well done!

Jennifer Smith, a Princeton Review consultant, will present a workshop on how and when to start preparing for college applications as well as the SAT and ACT.

Topics discussed will include:
· What it takes to land a spot at the best school for your student
· When they should start preparing
· How to crack the SAT and ACT

Update: go2.gwinnett Parent Portal
Gwinnett County Public Schools offers the go2.gwinnett Parent Portal as a tool to enhance the parent communication and involvement in their child's academic achievement. Through this online resource, parents can monitor their child's academic progress and attendance on an ongoing basis. In order to access this resource, parents must complete a form in person at Norcross HS and present a picture ID. Upon confirmation of guardianship through school records, parents will receive an email with token information to log in to the Parent Portal.
